About our Founder

Manning Sutton has spent his career in technology, business solutions and the non-profit sector (“tech for good”).  His early days were spent growing with his family up Oregon, eventually attending Oregon State University and the University of Idaho, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).   His first job was with IBM designing analog integrated circuits (ICs) and later moving into the field working as a system’s engineer, working with companies (clients) implemented IBM’s software and hardware solutions.  After ten years, a good friend and mentor recruited him to work at Gap Inc., working with computer systems to support their operations.  This work included the first intranet (internal use of systems using a web browser) and early e-commerce websites, among other things.  Eventually, he moved to the social sector, working as CIO for a San Francisco based non-profit (TechSoup), helping to support a growing, complex organization meet its mission.

He married his sweetheart and friend Hilary Goldman, biked together in the Bay Area, France and around the western US.  They continue to share a passion for cycling and now the entire family cycles on a regular basis.  Eventually, they had identical twin boys (surprise!) and have an active life in Berkeley, California.

In 2011 he and his family moved to Senegal, West Africa to volunteer in various social benefit projects and gain a new understanding and perspective by trying to learn more about the culture, people and country in general.  This experience was a turning point for him and his entire family’s thinking about what it means to be an American, being Senegalese and the world at large.

Upon his return to TechSoup, he moved into a more programmatic role working on new, innovative projects to improve lives and NGO’s capacity by working primarily in Kenya and Mozambique in partnership with the Aga Khan Foundation (with others such as USAID).He married his sweetheart and friend Hilary Goldman, biked together in the Bay Area, France and around the western US.
